Ruth Scott

When Ruth Scott died in January 2008, her family lost a beloved wife, mother and grandmother. But the musical community lost a true friend. It was only when the Friends of Music began preparing for the 2008 Music Week that we realized how much of a role Ruth played in our organization, and in the musical life of Campbell River for many years. Ruth had superior computer skills, and could always be counted on to produce membership lists, posters, publicity materials, data bases and programs. She was also our liaison with one of our artists, Pavel Egorov. Whatever job Ruth took on was done willingly and well , even though she was frequently in considerable pain. Ruth got most of her musical education as an adult, and despite severe arthritis, received her ARCT, joined the North Island Registered Music Teachers Association, and became a very thorough and effective teacher. She continued to upgrade her teaching skills through workshops, conferences and summer programs. Ruth’s family and her many friends and colleagues have chosen to remember her through an annual scholarship of $500. As Chopin was Ruth’s favourite composer, this award will be given to the winner of a Chopin piano competition, to be held in conjunction with Music Week starting next year. Current students of Friends of Music members within the School Districts 71 and 72 boundaries will be eligible for this scholarship. They may be of any age, including adults, and must be continuing their musical studies in the following year. Donations to the Ruth Scott Chopin Scholarship Fund may be sent to Campbell River Friends of Music P.O. Box 1006 Campbell River, B.C. V9W 6Y4 All donations are eligible for tax receipts.
